The history of slavery has always been told in a voice where the African was a victim and as justification for their plight today. In the Caribbean more than anywhere else in the diaspora the story of slavery is remembered and celebrated in the songs of survival and innovation.

THe Transatlantic trade

The Middle Passage was the worst leg of the Transatlantic slave trade. It is estimated that between 20% - 30% of the Africans who left Africa for the Americas died on the way there. Those who did not commit suicide died from the inhumane conditions on the ships and the poor sanitation.

Seasoning refers to the process by which an African was taught his role on the estate. A new African on the estate was often given to an older slave to be taught what was expected of him or her. One of the main elements of the seasoning process was the remaining of the African.
